What is a web proxy?
A web proxy is a script that allows you to access different websites through a 'gateway'. When you enter a URL into a proxy, you can view that website, but you are still technically on the proxy. With a proxy you can, in essence, visit a website without actually visiting the website.
Proxies can be used for four things:
1) To Unblock Websites - If you are at school or work, and there is a filter, you probably can't view your favorite sites like MySpace or Facebook. Using a proxy, you can circumvent those filters and get onto the website you want. Unblock Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and other social networks with ease!
2) To Stay Anonymous - Your IP address is kind of like a tool to locate your computer. With an IP Address, somebody can find out exactly where you live. When you use a proxy, you take on the server's IP address, making you anonymous.
3) To Work as a Cache - Proxies automatically save files you view on their server, so when you revisit those sites, it will already be loaded for you - meaning faster browsing.
4) To Stay Safe and Secure - Many websites have malicious code on them that can harm your computer. You can use a proxy to remove that code, and therefore protect yourself.
Web proxies are usually coded in either PHP or CGI. The most popular PHP Proxies are run on the script Glype or PHProxy, while CGIProxy is a script that uses CGI. PHP proxies allow for much better control over options and use less resources, however CGI proxies allow for much more reliable encryption and anonymity. A JavaScript proxy, the last type of proxy, comes in the form of Zelune. These proxies are usually not very reliable and sometimes fail to conceal your IP, as they are browser-side scripts as opposed to server-side scripts.
Some examples of proxies: Unblock Facebook and Unblock Facebook
Where does Unblocked Proxies come in all this? By nature of proxies, they are usually blocked fairly quickly by filters like WebSense and SmartFilter. It is Unblocked Proxies' mission to run a constantly updating list of new web proxies, so that you will always have a new one that is working at your school or job.
